Tony Stark’s greatest childhood rival, Tiberius Stone, moves back to the States from Europe. Hey, they’re good rivals, though (at least in flashback)! Tony tests out his new teleportation technology (pieced together from Sons of Yinsen and Reed Richards tech) — but why in the world is he still in the Classic Red and Gold armor? It’s starting to get ridiculous. Stark also attends a big bash for Stone’s U.S. homecoming, Rumiko’s pissed at him, Pepper and Happy ponder leaving Stark Solutions….and at issue’s end Tony catches Rumiko in the sack with Stone!! Many questions left unresolved, but for the most part well-done and leaves you anticipating next ish. Some readers, like me, may wonder if IM incorporating teleportation tech will make him «too tough» a la the «Chameleon Effect.»

Who are these guys who keep trying to ambush Stark? (Gee, one would think a billionaire like Tony would have the resources to prevent sneak attacks like this!) Tony apparently smooths things out with pal Ty Stone (but not Rumiko) while things heat up between Tone and biz rival Trevor Donohue! After Stark reams Trev about his business dealings, Donohue seems to set in motion events that will unwind Stark’s life!! Meanwhile, the Radioactive Man heats things up for Shellhead — the classic red and golds seeming insufficient against RM’s increased power! Cliffhanger ending and many loose ends that need to be tied up. Tieri makes it interesting, but not completely original. Keeps you guessing, at least

Once again, the opening of the ish shows Stark under attack by hired thugs, only this time he makes it to his IM armorto give them a proper response! (Although we have to wait until next issue to find out how he made it to the armor!) Then we’re treated to a fairly comprehensive retrospective from vol. 1 #124 to the present, which is cool for newer fans…and even for us older ones, natch! Captain America vouches for Stark on a talk show hosted by a bad Barbara Walters clone! Finally, we pick up where we left off last issue — IM in danger of being melted by the Radioactive Man’s self-destruct. On his third try, Shellhead’s new teleporter works, and he is successfully shunted away from RM’s threat. Later, the hated Trevor Donohue reveals that it is not he behind the horrible press Stark has been getting, but Ty Stone! Most readers probably already figured this out, however, and are wondering why Tony was so stupid. Stark then confronts Stone, who reveals all his dastardly machinations, and then zaps Tony in the back of the neck with some paralytic device! Paul Ryan easily proves Martinez’s artistic superior while Tieri improves more. Continuity Gaffes: When Ryan picks up art duties on pg. 12, he forgot to draw a melted IM faceplate! Also, the Stark/IM retrospective has Tony in the Classic Red and Gold armor during the Armor Wars — not the Silver Centurion armor.

Ty Stone has whisked Tony Stark’s consciousness away to his «Dream Vision» realm, and we’re treated to a more-or-less retrospective of key parts of Tony’s life (good thing Layton does most of the art in this section!). But Stone is playing with Stark — he can control his Dream Vision and mess with Tony as much as he wants! However, OOPS! Dream Vision is «a matter of will,» and unfortunately for Ty, Tony’s will has been tested and tested again — and it’s more than a match for Stone’s. The two do battle in a virtual setting and the outcome isn’t in doubt. But in the end, Stone is still alive — and he’ll use his vast information empire to still be a thorn in Stark’s side! Incoming artist Keron Grant does a few pages here and….well, yuck.

Ty goes back into the Dream Vision. He dreams that Tony has gone rogue, and the Avengers put him down. Elsewhere, Tony considers his life and recent events in a bar. Rhodey walks in as he’s about to take a swig of… ginger ale. The same guy that punched Tony for defending Rumiko a few issues back is up to his old tricks, and Tony “beats the crap outta him” – or so Rhodey says. Ty escapes back into Dream Vision, this time a fantasy with all of Tony’s ex-flames… this guy’s pretty sick. Tony gets into a fight with Blizzard over Coney Island, and Jocasta picks the “Horned” Armor for him. (Wasn’t she supposed to be brilliant? Sigh.) Art’s pretty weak, it looks like a graffiti comic book. At the end of the issue, Tony drops the bomb that he’s shutting down Stark Solutions and giving away his fortune. Hm, we’ve seen this before

Tony Stark has essentially «erased» his identity and has now become tech wiz «Hogan Potts» at Askew Electronics. Yep, you got it — T.S. is a 9-5 average joe, now!! Yeesh. On his way to work, the Shocker wrecks the subway car Stark is on, and we see him battle Shock in a prototype armor. The armor looks like crap, which is fitting since it goes along w/the rest of the story. Shocker is defeated, Stark gets chewed out by his boss for being late again, but then later we see Iron Man testing his new suit of armor at Askew’s labs! (Wonder how they checked his ID to verify it is indeed IM and not some baddie posing as IM….not to mention how «Potts» can actually work on the IM w/o anybody getting suspicious! It’s not Tony Stark in his own private lab anymore, after all!) The material dubbed SKIN is apparently used in IM’s new duds, and at least that looks like a cool idea. In the waning pages, the «Mad Bomber» who has been plaguing NYC the last few days now transmits a bomb into Shellhead’s armor! To be continued!!

OK, so Iron Man has fifteen minutes to shed his armored duds before they go «BOOM!» He decides to head for Avengers Mansion where a force field can be put over the armor, so it can detonate safely. But wait — an obstacle appears! It’s Mr. Hyde — who calls himself «The Fuse» for the bomb that is in Shellhead’s armor (*yawn*)! Besides the fact that this is the third ish in a row where we are subjected to a most gratuitous use of a random baddie, Grant’s rendition of Hyde is absolutely horrific (although his Iron Man actually isn’t bad). And does Frank read his own scripts? On page 4, IM is wary of using his shields for fear of detonating the bomb, yet there he is on page 8 utilizing exactly that feature of the armor! (And if he’s not sure just what feature of his armor may detonate the bomb, why use any of them, eh?) Note the annoying typeface switch of the chronometer on page 13, too! Tony makes to the Mansion, but the armor doesn’t blow up! OOPS!

Iron Man tries to discover clues as to who blew up Askew Electronics … and finds some, with the help of his armor’s new spheroid probes and Jocasta. Meanwhile, Askew goes out of business due to the disaster, Stark ends up in bed with his boss, he also greets Rhodey in his new apt., and most importantly — GETS NEW ARMOR!! It’s pretty sharp, too — S.K.I.N. pours out of the uni-beam, while components are attached over top. One of it’s features: The Chameleon Effect! It’s back, but this time it’s a huge power drain. The others are listed in the letters page. The mystery bomber is revealed to be….The Ghost!! Yes!! MODOK is also involved! Now we’re gettin’ somewhere!! Things you may wonder about: What happened to Stark’s heart attachment? Why did Stark download Jocasta into his armor — I thought that was one of things that made his last armor sentient! Yeesh! And, how in the world did «Hogan Potts’ » landlord let him soup up his apartment like that?? Tieri hits his stride, and Grant’s Iron Man is sharp. (But his other characters still are wretched!)

Iron Man vs. The Ghost and MODOK! Ghost reveals that his and A.I.M.’s «merger» provided the rogue technology group with the means to sabotage their competition, while allowing Ghost «a larger platform» for his goal of corporate destruction. The first half of the ish provides great battle scenes, showcasing much of the new IM armor’s capabilities. Grant’s art is decent, provided he sticks to superheroes/villains, rather than regular folk. We see the armor’s «contingency program» — Jocasta can take control of the armor when Stark is incapacitated (but again, wasn’t this a major concern regarding the armor’s sentience??). Tieri weaves recent plotlines together rather well: Trevor Donahue has donated his fortune to Stark, believing that Tony’s actions of relinquishing his co., etc., were the result of a subliminal suggestion planted by Ty Stone’s «DreamVision!» Stark thus uses the new cash flow to save Askew from bankruptcy, and to in effect turn Donahue’s co. into the new STARK ENTERPRISES!! In the waning pages, Stark pontificates about his role as inventor, even questioning if Stark Solutions was a good idea for one of his talent (as many an Iron Fan did!). The last panel sets up even more intrigue: Stark wants «all there is to know» about Stark/Fujikawa….he thinks «it’s high time I got my old company back!» YES!! These last few pages are really what earns this ish

Whose fault is this? Tieri takes a combo of cool and plain dumb ideas — the Sentient Armor and the Sons of Yinsen — and weaves a story around ‘em. As every Iron Fan knew, the stupid move by Tony Stark (and writer Joe Quesada) of burying the deceased Sentient Armor on that deserted isle (with a marked grave, no less) would come back to haunt Iron Man. And, waddya know? Now it’s the time! The SoY’s (Sons of Yinsen) mother ship makes a U.S. appearance, since they have decided to «disseminate their ‘religion.'» Askew Electronics comes under attack — by what looks like the Sentient Armor! Jocasta has a fit and disappears, while Iron Man discovers it is actually Sun Tao (see Annual 2000) in the armor. Intrigue abounds, as there is a theft of S.K.I.N., and then the SoY appear to reclaim Sun Tao — all in copies of the Sentient Armor!! But the biggest surprise of all: the brain of Professor Yinsen has been integrated with the actual Sentient Armor (well, was it really a surprise?). The Prof. and the SoY demand the return of Sun Tao — or it’s curtains for IM!
