Green Lantern v3 #101
Emerald Knights, Part 1: Coming To Terms
Fecha: 1998.08| Créditos: Ron Marz (Guiones), Jeff Johnson (Dibujos)| Edición española: Green Lantern: Caballeros Esmeralda (Planeta).

he first thing Hal Jordan does when he realizes he’s stuck in the future is to go see Coast City, his home town. When he gets there he sees nothing but a monument to all the people who died there, and to himself. Kyle tells him all about Mongul and the destruction of Coast City, Parallax and the events of Final Night. Hal seems to have a similar reaction to before, and while flying off to try and get his head clear, he sees a bus stuck on railroad tracks with an oncoming train. He swoops down and saves the kids inside, and when all is clear, the bus driver thanks him profusely. He tells her that he doesn’t deserve the accolades and asks if she knows who he is. She tells him it doesn’t matter who he is, he saved a bunch of kids and that makes him an angel in her book. Hal returns to Coast City to find Kyle waiting for him. He tells him that soemthing happened that made everything right, it reminded him why he put the ring on in the first place, and all is well. Meanwhile on Apokalips, DeSaad convinces Kalibak that if he really wants to ingratiate himself to his father Darkseid, he ought to try and destroy the «new Green Lantern» Hal Jordan, which leads right into our next issue…

Notas: Saga Caballero Esmeralda. Hal regresa desde 1961 a 1998 (#101-106)

Emerald Knights, Part 2: Old Friends
Fecha: 1998.08| Créditos: Ron Marz (Guiones), Paul Pelletier (Dibujos)| Edición española: Green Lantern: Caballeros Esmeralda (Planeta).

yle takes Hal to Warriors to see the old gang, Alan Scott, John Stewart and Guy Gardner. The guys are speechless, they are standing in the presence of the greatest GL of all time. Hal however, doesn’t know how to deal with it. John and Guy are people he hadn’t met before this time jaunt, and he had only heard of Alan. To clear his head, Hal goes to see some old friends, Carol Ferris and his old mechanic buddy Tom (don’t remember his last name…). Hal explains to them the situation and they’re getting settled in to enjoy eachother’s company when Kalibak shows up. Hal takes him out, and in the process destroys half of the Ferris Aircraft installation. In the end the issue’s a big brawl with Hal saying that he’s here to stay. I’m really looking forward to the next issue, Hal rejoins the JLA, leaving Kyle on the outside…

Emerald Knights, Part 3: Strange Bedfellows
Fecha: 1998.09| Créditos: Ron Marz (Guiones), Jeff Johnson, Anthony Williams (Dibujos)| Edición española: Green Lantern: Caballeros Esmeralda (Planeta).

Can’t say that I was particularly impressed with this issue. Kyle takes Hal to the JLA Watchtower to introduce him to his old team-mates and the new faces. Hal’s in for quite a surprise (and so is Kyle, actually), when Superman offers him membership. Kyle gets really upset and feels that the League is forcing him out. He takes off and while trying to sort things out, saves a bunch of people from an exploding building. In the end there is a lot of mess to clean up and the police officer in charge starts getting on Kyle’s case about it. Kyle gets even more upset and flies off. He gets home and Jenni informs him that his manager called and that he didn’t get a job he was hoping for. He blows up at Jenni, appologizes, then they kiss. Later, while Kyle is trying to sleep, Batman shows up and tells Kyle that he’s welcome in the League, and that he nominated Hal for membership in a «Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer» kind of deal. Kyle feels a lot better about things and sleeps well. I felt that Kyle was a whining little jerk through this whole issue. I understand how he could feel the way he did, but I think the whole attitude was a back-step for the character. Green Arrow #136 – Connor shows up at the watch tower looking for Kyle. He apparently has gotten word that the terrorist group that killed his father is back again. He needs some heavy fire-power if he’s going to take them on, and since Kyle’s not available, Hal steps in. Hal is enjoying himself until he asks why Connor does what he does, and Connor tells him he’s Ollie’s son. Hal doesn’t take it well, finding out that Barry’s dead, Ollie’s dead and he’s supposed to be dead himself. He composes himself well and they go after the terrorists. They do a good job until it’s seen that their enemies have taken hostages. Hal is forced to give up the ring and Connor has his bow and arrows taken. The terrorists reveal their plan: They intend to drop a nuclear bomb onto Mt. Ranier, setting off a huge volcano that will level most of Washington. This issue will be continued in Green Lantern 104.

Emerald Knights, Part 4: Greener Pastures Conclusion
Fecha: 1998.09| Créditos: Ron Marz (Guiones), Paul Pelletier (Dibujos)| Edición española: Green Lantern: Caballeros Esmeralda (Planeta).

I was actually pretty impressed with this issue. It starts off with a recap of Green Arrow #136, after which, the terrorists tie Hal and Connor to the nuclear bomb and prepare to drop it. Connor manages to reach into his pouch and pull out an arrow head, which he uses to free himself and Hal. Hal goes face to face with a mercenary whom he used to fly with when he was in the Air Force, and whom was ultimately responsible for Hal’s dismissal from the Air Force. There have been insinuations that this issue was derivative of the film Broken Arrow, which I haven’t seen, so I can’t really judge, but I thought Ron Marz hit a high point of recent issues recently.

Green Lantern v3 #105
Haunted By the Past
Fecha: 1998.10| Créditos: Ron Marz (Guiones), Jeff Johnson, Scot Eaton (Dibujos)| Edición española: Green Lantern: Caballeros Esmeralda (Planeta).

Here we see the beginnings of the wrapup of the Emerald Knights storyline. The return of Parallax was handled quite nicely, in that he actually wasn’t brought back from the dead. This Parallax is actually from shortly before the Zero Hour storyline, and in his travels through the time stream, he felt his own presence in the modern time. Kyle initially wants to stop him from sending Hal back to his rightful time, but realizes that Parallax is right, if Hal doesn’t go back in time, Parallax won’t be there to stop the sun-eater, causing not only the destruction of Earth, but also the destruction of countless other solar systems that would have also been destroyed. This issue also adds to the mystery of John Stewart’s new powers, last seen in issue #84, as he blasts Parallax with some sort of green energy. This storyline will be concluded in the next issue, which starts off quite an interesting story arc if the rumors are to be believed (but I won’t spoil those here…).
