A chemical explosion triggers a reaction that makes Bizarro-Jr. #1’s face like a normal Bizarro’s. Bizarro #1, seeing this with telescopic vision, thinks that Superman has hatched a plot to take away his baby, and raises an army of Bizarroes to make war on Earth. Meanwhile, Bizarro-Supergirl’s maternal instincts are aroused and she tries to keep Bizarro-Jr. #1 for herself. Eventually Bizarro-Jr. #1 is restored to his parents, Bizarro-Supergirl dies of Blue Kryptonite exposure, and it is discovered that all Bizarro babies undergo a brief time of appearing human before they transform into their normal, Bizarro selves.

Clark Kent displayed super-powers from the very day he arrived on Earth, and was trained in their proper use and how to keep them secret by Jonathan Kent. Martha Kent wove a playsuit for him from his blue, yellow, and red blankets of indestructible cloth found in the wrecked rocket from Krypton. Finally, after a costume was made from that same cloth and other artifacts from his rocket, Clark Kent became Superboy and made his public debut. His career as Superboy stretched from his eighth year of age through high school and early college, after which he became known as Superman. The Kents died after Clark’s graduation from high school, whereupon he left Smallville to attend college in Metropolis. After his college graduation, Clark Kent got a job as a reporter on the Daily Planet, and continued to fight crime and right wrongs as Superman.

But, when he sees baby Kal-El in the arms of Lara at a time in which he still exists materially, he realizes that he cannot be in his own universe, where such a paradox would be impossible. Instead, he learns that he has gone into a parallel universe, where history can be changed. Part III: The Death Of Superman!

The inscriptions note that the container holds deadly Virus X cultures. Superman smashes the container into the Earth with a boulder, but his weakness when Jimmy approaches him convinces him he is dying of Virus X. Superman isolates himself in a glass chamber and begins setting his affairs in order, with the help of Supergirl, the Legion of Super-Heroes, and his robots. He bids farewell to Lois Lane, Lana Lang, Batman, and Robin. Even Brainiac 5 cannot find a cure for Virus X. But Supergirl goes back in space and time to Krypton, shortly before it exploded, and hears Tharb-El, the biologist, saying he is destroying the sample of Virus X to be included in the space container. Supergirl returns to Earth in 1962 and explains her discovery; thus, Superman knows he is not dying of Virus X. Mon-El, in the Phantom Zone, telepathically informs Saturn Girl that Superman is being weakened by a chunk of Kryptonite which became lodged in Jimmy Olsen’s camera when Superman smashed the container into the ground. Jimmy finds and disposes of the Kryptonite, and Superman recovers, thanking all his friends for their great aid to him.

Clark Kent, Perry White, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen are hired to act as extras in Invasion, a World War II epic movie being filmed in the Pacific. Unknown to the reporters and the movie-makers, a contingent of aliens from the planet Zhor have become marooned on Earth when their spacecraft is disabled by a meteor. When they see the «invading» fleet of ships from the movie, they assume they are being attacked, take over Japanese weaponry still left on the island, and try to repel the «invaders». Clark Kent, to cover for a supposed «injury» done him by a shell and to be able to operate with super-powers in public, summons Supergirl by ventriloquism. She fakes giving Clark temporary super-powers from a blood transfusion. The now openly-powerful Clark Kent defeats the Zhorians. When he hears their story, Superman repairs their ship and helps them take off again. Later, Clark pretends to have gained amnesia about recent events when the transfusion «wears off,» and also pretends not to believe Jimmy and Lois’s stories of his derring-do.

(Imaginary) Part I: The Titanic Twins… the publisher of the Daily Planet posts a notice of pay raises. Everyone got a raise except Clark Kent. Sliding next to Clark, Lois gloats. «Frankly Clark, those raises were given for getting scoops. You’ve got to be more dynamic… a go-getter.» Clark tries to be gallant. «I guess I’m just a flop, Lois» he says out loud, but to himself he is amazed that everyone has gotten a raise by writing stories about his exploits as Superman. When Perry offers to take everyone to lunch in celebration, Clark declines. Perry thinks that Kent is embarrassed but the fact is that he has been called to the Fortress of Solitude. When he arrives, he is greeted by Supergirl who tells him that the people of Kandor are anxious to speak with him. Turning on the view screen, the tiny people of Kandor, shrunken into a bottle by Brainiac, start off by complimenting Superman for his many accomplishments but then list his failures: restoring Kandor to it’s original size, finding an antidote to Kryptonite, and wiping out evil. For the second time that day, Superman is faced with his shortcomings. Kandorians give Superman an ultimatum: «Within six months, if you fail, we will ask you to let one of us change places with you and try to accomplish them!» Agreeing to the six-month trial period, Superman decides to take a bold move. For years he had been working on a brain-evolution machine, powered by the rays of every variety of Kryptonite, to increase his mental power a hundred times. Although Supergirl wants to test the machine on herself, Superman insists that the risk be his. Entering the chamber, Superman places the headband in position and tells Supergirl to adjust the machine to maximum power. As the power increases, Superman screams in pain, but before Supergirl can cut the power, it explodes. Staring in astonishment, two Supermen stand now before her, one in a solid-red costume and one in a solid-blue, each a hundred times smarter than the original. Wasting not a moment, the two set to work redesigning Brainiac’s enlarging ray and power source. Leaving Supergirl to guard earth, they fly Kandor to the fringes of the solar system and the two Supermen hurl fragments of «hyper-megneton», an element unknown on earth, together to form a small planetoid. The hyper-megneton then attracts the shattered remnants of Krypton, including every piece of Kryptonite, from the remote corners of space until it recreates Krypton. Using Brainiac’s ray, the two Supermen expand Kandor to original size, and in the presence of the yellow sun, every citizen of Kandor now has super-powers. Naming the new planet New Krypton, the people of Kandor use their powers to also recreate such wonders as the Jewel Mountains, the Scarlet Jungle, and the cities of Krypton. But, says Superman Red, «In this solar system, you will always be a planet of super-beings. Is that what you want?» Part II: The Anti-Evil Ray… The decision is made. Kandorians decide that they should return to their original galaxy to live a normal life. In anticipation, Superman Red and Superman Blue had already placed the planet on an orbit which would return it to the original constellation. Returning to the Fortress, they find the Bottle of Kandor in it’s usual place. Supergirl had created a copy of the city to serve as a memento, and celebrates by checking off two unsolved super-problems. However, a mental voice breaks the celebration. Lori Lemaris, and the people of Atlantis, had seen what the two Supermen had done for Kandor. For centuries, Atlantean mer-people had been considered freaks, hiding from the humans, and hoped that Superman Red and Blue could also help them find a new world. Remembering the Memorial World of Krypton, now unnecessary since New Krypton exists, the two Supermen, Supergirl and Krypto focus their heat vision on the polar ice-caps creating a waterworld. But how to transport the citizens of the underwater civilization of Atlantis through space to the new planet? Launching magnetic meteors in a spiral orbit between earth and the new planet, the two Supermen create an immense tunnel for the Atlanteans to «swim» to their new planet, «Hydra». Returning to the Fortress, the two Supermen address their next task: erasing crime and evil from earth. As Superman Blue draws out the designs for an «Anti-evil ray», Superman Red is already building the device. After only a few seconds of exposure to the ray, giant Warrior ants lose all aggression and cease their battle. With their test a success, the two quickly construct many of the devices, place them in satellites, and launching them into a precise orbit above the earth. Within seconds, criminals stop in their tracks, returning their loot. But there is more. In Russia, Prime Minister Kruschev orders his arsenal of missiles dumped into the sea. On Cuba, Castro releases all of his political prisoners. In space, Brainiac reconsiders his attack on earth. And Luthor creates a serum to cure every known disease. After the Supermen analyze the serum, they add a few drops to each of the major rivers of the world and miraculously the blind can see, the crippled can walk, and even Luthor re-grows his hair. As a reward, Luthor is paroled pledging to devote his life to science. However, when they return to the Fortress they are horrified to see Supergirl releasing the criminals of the Phantom Zone. «She’s gone berserk!» screams Superman Red. Part III: The End Of Superman’s Career… What had appeared to be a horrible mistake turned into a pleasant surprise. The «Anti-evil» ray had been so successful that even the Phantom Zone criminals had been reformed. Once released, they sought to travel to New Krypton and begin useful lives. Supergirl had also made this same decision. Unfortunately, to reach New Krypton, they would need a spacecraft. Miraculously, as if on cue, the Legion of Superheroes appear with a giant space arc to transport the travelers safely. Once they have gone, Superman Red and Superman Blue receive a frantic call from Luthor. Mxyzptlk has been sighted in the skies above Metropolis. Streaking to the city, the two are astonished to see Mxyzptlk using his magic to create a monument to all super-beings on earth. «It’s the least I could do to make up for all of the mischief I’ve done in the past,» says Mxyzptlk. And, to surprise them even more, Mxyzptlk speaks his name backwards voluntarily returning himself to the 5th dimension. With Kandor enlarged, Kryptonite eradicated and crime eliminated, the two Supermen realize that they are now free to marry. Lana Lang and Lois Lane have always been the loves of Superman’s life but how to decide which Superman marries whom. The two decided to construct giant steel «L’s». Standing on a distant Himalayan mount, they decide that whichever «L» is struck by lightning first would chose. As luck would have it, both are struck simultaneously. Sitting on the mountaintop, each is frustrated. «Frankly, if I had my choice, I’d marry Lois,» says Superman Red. «And I’d pick Lana,» says Superman Blue. «Then our problem’s solved,» they agree. The Supermen each reveal the truth to the woman they love and both Lana and Lois readily accept their Superman’s proposal. Later, the two couples meet in the park and each woman is surprised to see Clark Kent standing next to them. Soon, the confusion is explained and they decide to have a double wedding. After weeks of preparation, Jimmy Olsen arrives to be Superman’s Best Man and Lucy Lane is Lois’ Maid of Honor. Standing excitedly in the hallway, Lucy proposes to Jimmy and a triple wedding is performed. But all is not well in the Superman Red household. Lois senses that her Superman longs for New Krypton and arranges for Superman Blue to build a «Super-Suit», with jet controls, to get them to the planet. On the fateful day, Superman Red, Lois, Krypto and the Super-Horse wave goodbye to Lana and Superman Blue and head off to their new life. Lana turns to Superman Blue and asks, » Be honest with me dear. Wouldn’t you like to be with him on New Krypton?» «Frankly no,» he says. «I’ve come to love my home here on earth.» Several days later, Superman Blue visits Perry White in the Planet offices to make an announcement. «Now that crime and evil are wiped out, earth has no need for a Superman, so I’m going to retire.» Leaving his robots to take care of any disasters, Superman dedicates himself to science and his family.Four years pass, and Jimmy and Lucy visit the Kents and their two children. Later, after they return home, they look in on New Krypton. Kal-El, Lois and their twins appear content in their way of life, with no regrets that they came to New Krypton. But, suppose this story had actually happened. Which couple do you think would be happiest?

The Fantastic Story of Superman’s Sons
Fecha: 1964.01| Créditos: Edmond Hamilton (Guiones), Curt Swan (Dibujos)| Edición española: SUPERMAN 483 (NOVARO).
(Imaginary) Part I: Jor-El II and Kal-El II. In a Metropolis hospital, on a day that may or may not ever happen, Superman is overjoyed when he learns that he is the father of twin boys. «They aren’t identical twins», explains the doctor sadly. Even without his explanation, differences are readily obvious. While Jor-El II appears to have inherited Superman’s powers, Kal-El II has inherited the characteristics of his human mother. As the years pass, Kal-El II grows up living in the big shadow of his super-brother. Even though Superman repeatedly asks Jor-El II to stop his taunting, and to include and protect his brother, Kal becomes more and more introverted prompting Superman to take a radical decision. In his travels in space, Superman had discovered a planet with unique radiation from two suns that would give even a normal earthman superpowers. Using a protective space suit, Superman transports Kal-El II through space to the planet and the boy is ecstatic. Here, he can fly, has all the super-powers of his father and decides to stay as this planet’s «Superman». But the joy that he receives from his powers does not last long. Realizing that it is Christmas back home, Kal uses his telescopic vision and watches his family opening presents. Everyone appears so happy there; all except Kal. Depressed and homesick, Kal throws a huge rock from the planet to strike a passing asteroid making a signal for his father to come retrieve him. Grabbing at straws, Superman then uses science to help his son. Slaving away in the laboratory, Superman eventually develops an elixir that he hopes will give Kal super-powers. To their amazement, when Kal drinks the liquid he can immediately lift a huge safe, but within moments he becomes invisible. Quickly, an antidote is administered. After he recovers, Kal thanks his father for all of the attempts, but asks that he just stop. The next morning, Superman takes Jor-El II to help round up some racketeers, leaving a robot to guard Kal-El and his wife. In a field near the house, Kal watches them leave and again feels left out. Turning, he begins to walk home when two racketeers jump from the bushes and grab him. «This is the brother that is non-super,» shouts one of the crooks. «Well hold him for a hostage.» But before they can move, the robot appears to capture the crooks and alert Superman. That night, Kal overhears his mother and father talking about the incident. «Since he’s the weaker of our two sons, you must always guard Kal-El against such perils», insists his mother. Feeling weak and humiliated, Kal rushes from the house and decides to run away. Lightning illuminates his face, and only the falling rain from a summer shower hides the tears running down his cheeks as he runs down the road. Realizing his son has left, Superman quickly searches the area and finds Kal asleep in a nearby barn. Realizing that he must do something to build the self-esteem of his son, Superman suggests that he, Kal and Jor visit Kandor where none of them will have powers. Part II: The New Nightwing and Flamebird. The three arrive at the Fortress of Solitude, and after reducing their size they parachute into the bottle city of Kandor, the last remaining city of Krypton. Superman takes his two sons to enroll them in Kandor University, to learn the history of Krypton. Their first assignment is a trip to view statues memorializing the greatest minds of the long-dead planet. Among them are Zan Zarn who discovered atomic power and Murn Abbas, inventor of the Repulsion-Halo which defeated an alien invasion of Krypton. And last, but not least, the two boys stop to stare at a statue of Jor-El, Krypton’s greatest scientist, and their grandfather. In Kandor, as he had on earth, Jor-El II excelled in physical endeavors, soon becoming a star in Sky Polo and Kandorian weight lifting, while Kal could not even make the team. Instead, Kal turned to academics, studying long nights in the library until, fatefully one night, Kal heard a loud crash and witnessed a masked thief using a rocket belt to fly away with a stolen device. The next night, the Mystery Raider strikes again stealing the only known specimen of the rare element, Volium. The two boys decide to alter the costumes that Jimmy Olsen and their father had used years before in Kandor with Jor becoming the new Nightwing and Kal the new Flamebird. Going to the hidden Night Cave, and powering up the Nightmobile, the two head out on patrol, and soon discover the Mystery Raider breaking into the aquarium which housed some of Krypton’s greatest ocean creatures. Searching through the halls, the brothers discover the Raider in the process of stealing the ancient Repulsion-Halo. Suddenly aware of the two, the Raider focuses the ray on the glass tank, shattering the walls enclosing a giant sea squid. Quickly, the boys ignite their jet-belts to pursue the raider, first flying over the talons of the squid then up through a skylight to the roof. As soon as they emerge into the open the Raider opens fire and Flamebird (Kal) is hit. Losing the power of his jet pack, Flamebird falls toward the rooftop and Nightwing (Jor) streaks down dives down to catch Kal. Safe on the ground, Kal realizes the one thing that should be so obvious… all of the stolen materials come from Old Krypton and no Kandorian would know how to use the ancient Repulsion-Halo. Back at the university, Kal scours the history books and finds a clue to the Raider but Jor dismisses it. Returning to patrol as Nightwing and Flamebird, the two use their jet-belts to fly to the edge of the city to watch the artificial sun set and near the Jungle, discover living examples of the two Kryptonian birds they were named for. The harmony of the moment is destroyed when suddenly the two harmless birds are transformed into huge monsters. In the split second before they can react, Kal notices the Raider flying off and realizes that this must be his doing. Suddenly, the monstrous Flamebird grabs Kal dragging him through the air. In an instant, Jor has flown after the bird and uses his power jets to scare the bird and drop Kal. Once free, the boys work together grabbing fisherman’s nets to capture the birds and head back to earth. «I told you I had a clue from history on that Raider, and now I know I’m right», screams Kal. «A terrible menace has come out of Krypton to threaten earth!… We have to warn the world of danger!» Part III: Kal-El IIs Mission to Krypton. Emerging from the bottle city, Kal and Jor enlarge themselves to normal size and realize that the Raider has also enlarged himself and escaped. With an urgency neither of them had ever felt before, the brothers speed off to warn Superman. But before they can prepare for anything, a strange ray strikes two lizards in the zoo enlarging them to monsters. Superman and Jor stop them easily, only then to be faced by a giant water snake and an ape. Finally the raider broadcasts an ultimatum. «I have given you a sample of my powers. Accept me as world ruler in 24 hours or I will turn loose monsters on every city of earth.» Superman and Jor prepare to take off looking for the dangerous Raider. Kal, again, is left behind wondering what to do because he is the weaker brother. Then it strikes him. The clues lead back to old Krypton. Somehow he must go back to that world before it exploded. Using a small super-speed plane, Kal hurries to the fortress by himself and uses a time bubble left for Superman by the Legion of Super Heroes to travel back in time to Krypton, before it exploded. Kal needs a pair of anti-grav shoes to displace the immense gravity of Krypton, and walks to an information machine to find Jor-El. With deep emotions, Kal-El II stands before the man that would be his grandfather and tells him that he has traveled a great distance in hopes of studying science with him. Jor-El agrees to give him a try, and when he asks the boy his name, Kal says, «My name is Kal-El Kent.» Entering Jor-El’s laboratory, Kal watches Gann Artar, a brilliant biologist, demonstrate his new devolutionary ray to the Science Council. Within seconds of energizing the ray, modern animals revert to their more primeval form, essentially making monsters from pets. Disgusted by the results of the ray, the council forbids any future experimentation with the ray, but Gann Antar shouts revenge. «Fools! You’re only jealous of me!» he screams. Perhaps it is an unspoken understanding, or simply good fate, but Kal and Jor-El form an immediate bond with one another and later that day Jor-El takes Kal to the Crypt of El. «It’s strange», says Jor-El, but you look like them. Suddenly feeling sad, and realizing that his grandfather’s life will be cut short when Krypton explodes, Kal give Jor-El the blueprints for the time bubble hoping in his heart that Jor-El can use the plans to save the planet. «This design is truly amazing, Kal-El Kent! I’ll build the thing as soon as I finish my freeze-force experiments.» A few nights later, while demonstrating the freezing force suspended animation ray, the devolutionary ray suddenly flashes from outside striking Krypto’s ancestor. Instantly, the dog becomes large, enraged and charges. Without hesitation, Kal focuses the freezing force on the dog placing it in suspended animation and giving them time to find an antidote for the terrible ray. An hour later, Jor-El has concocted an antidote to the induced atavism, returning Krypto to normal. After some further testing, they are able to revert all of the affected creatures to normal, and as a result Gann Artar is sentenced to the Phantom Zone, an inter-dimensional prison. Leaning over the projector, the executioner pushes a black button and Artar begins to fade between dimensions. «I’ll have vengeance yet. You’ll see.» Soon Kal realizes that he must leave Krypton, but as the time bubble materializes in the present, the plans he had left with Jor-El materialize with him. «History cannot be changed», he sobs. In the fortress, Kal uses the Zone-O-Phone, a device Superman uses to communicate with Phantom Zone prisoners to seek Gann Artar only to find the Phantom Zoners laughing. «He escaped when a space warp temporarily opened the zone», they laugh. «He is the Raider and he has conquered your father and brother.» Kal speeds home in his plane and then races toward the house. Frantic, his mother rushes out to tell him his father and brother have gone to Gann Artar’s base on Wild Mountain. Kal races after them, and finds his father and brother laying unconscious, poisoned by pieces of Green Kryptonite. Since Kal is human, he is not affected by the radiation and goes to face Gann Artar. Gann Artar flies down to confront Kal, and laughs. «Superman’s weakling son will soon join him and his other son in death!» But before Artar can even land, Kal pulls a Phantom Zone Projector from a lead-lined wrap and pushed the projector’s button returning Gann Artar to the Zone. Kal then rushes back to his father and brother, and drags them far away from the Green Kryptonite to safety. Back at home, «It’s wonderful how Kal-El II has changed», says his mother. Superman turns toward her and smiles. «If his grandfather, Jor-EL I were alive today, he would be proud indeed of his grandson Kal-El II.»

Clark Kent’s Brother
Fecha: 1965.02| Créditos: Desconocido (Guiones), Desconocido (Dibujos)| Edición española: SUPERMAN 542, EXTRA 1 (NOVARO).
(Imaginary) Superboy finished building a cabin cruiser as a gift for Martha and Jonathan Kent to take their dream vacation in the Caribbean. He was disappointed when he returned home to find that Ma Kent was ill with a cold and could not go on the trip, but his disappointment was short-lived… Superboys lamp-signal glowed indicating that Chief Parker, head of the Smallville police force, needed his help. Superboy soared into the sky and several people took special interest. Lana Lang watched with admiration, Pete Ross with envy, and a young Lex Luthor with pure hatred, for it was really Luthor that had caused this disaster. Streaking into the Chief’s office, Superboy saw the man being struck by bolts of force, however no sooner had Superboy appeared than they disappeared, and the startled Boy of Steel was left to wonder what has happened. The next day, a terrifying vortex appeared over Pete Ross, then a sphere of force appeared around Lana. Each time, Superboy sped to their rescue only to have the effect vanish as soon as he arrives. Curious, Superboy flew above Smallville searching for anything odd, and suddenly realizing that each event had been designed to draw him to a point. In an instant, he saw electronic eyes placed at crucial positions in the town and using his x-ray vision, discovered Luthors laboratory. Before him, Superboy watched Luthor triangulate his paths with all of the flights originating from the Kent’s house. If Luthor exposes my identity, all my enemies in the future will strike at me through Ma and Pa Kent! To prevent that, I… I have to leave them. Sadly, Clark gathered a few belongings, sneaking out of the Kent’s house and out of Smallville, vowing never to return. The next morning, Superboy went to Lana and Pete to explain that Clark had run away from home and that he was going to find him, no matter how long it took. «If he never comes back, it’ll be fine with me», says Pete Ross. That may be the way Pete feels, but the Kents are distraught and it takes time to heal this wound. Luthor, on the other hand, is ecstatic. «So, Clark Kent and Superboy are both gone… I’m almost sure now they’re the same person», he pondered. But to make sure, Luthor sought to get the Kents to confide in him. To accomplish this, Luthor first applied for a job at the Kent store replacing Clark. Once hired, he used his scientific skill to automate the stores ordering, and to avoid counterfeit money. Over time, the Kents are taken by Lex, and offer to adopt him. At first, Luthor sees this as an opportunity to make sure of Superboy’s identity, but then he changed his mind. They’re good to me, thought Luthor, I’ll try to be a good son to them. In the mean time, Superboy has traveled to the Arctic and prepared to build a fortress as a home, but can’t help feeling homesick. Using his telescopic vision, he saw his heartbroken parents crying, and decided to go return for a short visit, but when he flew through the window he was startled when Ma Kent screamed out his name with Luthor in the room. Amazingly, Luthor confessed that he had wanted to discover Superboy’s identity, but since Ma and Pa Kent were so kind to him, he could never hurt them. In a startling moment, Lex and Superboy shook hands, to form a surprising alliance. «I’ll use my scientific to help you», swore Luthor. The next day, Lana was thrilled that Superboy had found Clark and returned to Smallville. Pete Ross, on the other hand, is anything but thrilled. «I hoped he’d never come back. I’ll hate him for life.» Several years passed, and the loyalty of the two brothers only became stronger. After finishing college, Luthor was offered a position at the Metropolis Scientific Foundation, and Clark a job as cub reporter at the Metropolis Daily Planet. The news brought joy as well as sadness to the Kents, and seeing Martha’s tears Jonathan suggested that they all move to Metropolis. «You know we’ve been planning to sell the store and retire», he said. Getting the help of Lana Lang, who had already moved to Metropolis to be a TV reporter, the family found a new home, and with some aid from Superman, soon settled in. After several weeks, the Kents visited each son at their new place of work. At the Planet building, Clark introduces them to a young reporter named Lois Lane and Jonathan suggests Clark bring her to the house. Outside, Martha Kent gave Jonathan a stern lecture. Lana Lang is the ideal wife for Clark, she said. «Hummph,» mumbled Jonathan. «Women think they’re the best matchmakers… but you’ll see that it’s Lois Clark goes for.» Several weeks later, Pete Ross and Lana Lang dropped in for a visit at the Kent home, and immediately Lana began asking Clark about the new Superman, hero of Metropolis. «Lana still can’t see me for Superman,» fumed Pete, who strolled into Lex’s laboratory. Flattering Luthor, Pete Ross gained access to some of Luthor’s more dangerous inventions and planted a device which will ultimately wreak havoc. Several weeks later, the destruction began when the Sub-Treasury Building mysteriously disappeared and a Kryptonian Flying Magnet suddenly appeared in the sky destroying the 1st Metropolis Bank. In her haste to get the story, Lois Lane rushed to the scene. Seeing Lois in danger, Superman rushed to grab the magnet and protect Lois, but the device was studded with green Kryptonite, paralyzing Superman. Falling from the sky, Superman landed directly on Lois, and feared that he has killed her. Fortunately, she suffered only a concussion and was taken to Metropolis Hospital. As soon as she left, Superman sped to the Fortress to find the door blasted open and several Kryptonian machines stolen. Fearing the worst, Superman returned to Metropolis and went to Lois’ hospital room. Sitting beside her, Superman said, «When I thought for a moment you were dead, I realized how much I love you… I’m secretly Clark Kent and I want you to marry me as soon as you’re back on your feet.» Ecstatic, Lois agrees. Sadly, Lana Lang who had opened the door to hear his confession and proposal closes the door quietly. Wiping away the tears, Lana slipped out of the hospital, swearing never to reveal his secret. At Clark and Lois’ wedding, Pete Ross proposed again to Lana. Realizing that she would never marry Clark, Lana reluctantly agreed, but soon after they were married, Lana discovered blueprints for the machines that were looting Metropolis in Pete’s pockets. When she confronted her husband, Pete Ross angrily confirmed her worst suspicions. «Now I and my syndicate have weapons that even Superman can’t defeat. I always hated him and now I’m going to destroy him!» While Superman prepared defenses against his stolen weapons, Pete Ross used fourth dimensional-tongs to search space for Green Kryptonite. «…enough to kill Superman,» he laughed at Lana. Lana realized that she had to warn Superman, but Ross, knowing she still cared for Superman, locked her in the apartment, cut the telephone wire, then drove off to his own hidden base where he prepared for battle. Needing a way to lure Superman to him, Ross went to Clark and Lois’ suburban home. When Pete told Lois that Clark was hurt and she must come at once, she knows something is wrong and tries to warn Superman with her signal-watch. Before she could even push the button sending out the signal, Ross drew a strange gun and stunned Lois. Taking her back to his hideout as a hostage, he set off the signal and Superman arrived at blurring speed to find, «Pete Ross! And I never guessed…» said Superman. At the touch of a control, lead doors opened exposing Superman to huge amounts of Kryptonite radiation. Meanwhile, Lana was frantically trying to escape from Ross’ apartment. As a last resort, she set a wastepaper basket on fire, and the smoke brought the fire department. Lana was soon freed and, with fear in her heart, raced to Lois and Clark’s home, but found only an open door and an empty house. Desperate, Lana went to the Kents, and after explaining what Pete was about to do, Martha turned to Lex. «Lex, you’ve worked for years on that machine to give you a temporary charge of super-powers… could you use it now?» Lex knew that there was a major flaw in his machine, but said «I’d do anything for Clark! I’ll… I’ll do it!» Standing inside the machine, Lex flipped a switch and felt a terrific power flow through him. Stepping out, Lex grabbed a spare costume, and the second Superman blazed across the sky searching for Clark and in a moment burst into Pete Ross cavern hideout. Since Lex was not born on Krypton, Kryptonite had no effect on him. Desperately, Ross shot a Kryptonian Death ray at Lex, but the energy was deflected from Luthor’s now-invulnerable body to strike Pete directly, killing him instantly. «I haven’t much time, and I’ve got to make sure that these machines aren’t used for evil again,» said Luthor smashing all of Ross’ stolen weapons. Then, grabbing Lois and Superman, he flew from the cave. «Is Superman dead,» wept Lois. «No! Away from that Kryptonite he’ll recover,» said Lex weakly. Flying them to a distant cliff, Superman began to recover just as Luthor began to disappear. The defect in his super-charging invention was that it ultimately dissolved the cellular bonds causing his body to evaporate like dust in the wind. At the memorial ceremony, the family said their sad farewells to Lex Luthor Kent. In comfort, Lois turned to Lana offering friendship. In grief, Clark turned to the small bust of Lex marking his memorial. «Fate is strange!» said Clark. «When we were boys, I feared Lex would grow up into a lawless criminal… but instead he grew up to be the finest person of us all!»

Rinol-Jag goes on a hate crusade against the survivors of Krypton, destroying monuments to Superman, Supergirl, Jor-El and Lara, breaking into the Fortress of Solitude to capture the bottle-city of Kandor, and then using Kryptonite to capture Superman, Supergirl, and Krypto. But when Amalak tries to activate a device that will explode the Earth, Rinol-Jag questions his actions, and is shot by Amalak’s ray-gun. Falling, Rinol frees Superman, who is wounded by Amalak but nevertheless manages to knock him out and short-circuit his bomb. Later, Amalak is imprisoned, and Rinol-Jag makes friends with Superman and Supergirl.

(imaginary) Prior to Krypton’s destruction Brainiac visits the planet. Instead of shrinking Kandor, Brainiac shrinks Kryptonopolis, the home city of Jor-El. Brainiac does so to save the city from Krypton’s destruction and is hailed as a hero. However, Brainiac is unable to enlarge the city back to normal size, so the residents remain trapped in the bottle for many years. During that time Jor-El and Lara have another son, Knor-El. Years later, Brainiac finally discovers a way to enlarge the city. However, a tragic accident occurs, killing Brainiac and leaving the bottled city abandoned on Earth. Enough of Brainiac’s rare elements still exist to enlarge one man, so citizens compete for the honor of becoming Earth’s Superman. Knor-El wins with Kal-El finishing second.
